Abstract
Hydroxylamine hydrochloride has been tested in Vicia faba primary root-tips where it induced chromatid inter and intra-changes of a delayed type (Nicoloff et al. 1971). Besides an increase in these effects with rising temperature and at higher pH, a larger proportion of incompleteness has also been observed compared to other chemicals. Chemically, hydroxylamine is known to react with cytosine moiety in nucleic acid and to induce main clevage in DNA (Borenfreund et al. 1964). This reaction with cytosine has been investigated in detail in TMV (Fraenkel-Conrat et al: 1972) where the formation of N4-hydroxycytosine has been demonstrated under definite experimental conditions depending on pH among other factors.
