Abstract
The metabolic fate of 1,4-dioxane, an organic solvent used in a variety of laboratory and industrial applications, in animals or man is not completely established, although it has been reported that dioxane is metabolized in part to diglycolic acid and oxalic acid. In contrast to the reported metabolic fate of dioxane, we have found in rats that dioxane is excreted in the urine primarily (approximately 85% of excreted material) as β-hydroxyethoxyacetic acid (HEAA) and most of the remainder as unchanged dioxane. The identification of HEAA was made by various chromatographic techniques (thin layer, ion exchange, and gas), as well as mass spectrometry and nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometry.
