Abstract
Summary A compound synthesized from aspartic acid by a cell-free lysate of Escherichia coli was identified as 2-butynedioic acid by thin layer co-chromatography and gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. Based on previous data showing the condensation of this compound into the quinolinic acid molecule, we propose that 2-butynedioic acid is an early intermediate in the de novo biosynthesis of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide by E. coli .
