Abstract
Abstract Indole-3-carboxaldehyde was isolated (0.02%) from the leaves of the edible cabbage Brassica oleracea and identified by direct comparison with the authentic compound. This substance is also present in trace amounts in the inflorescence of the cauliflower Brassica oleracea var. botrytis , but could not be detected in seeds. This aldehyde inhibits the germination of water-cress seeds at 80 μg ml −1 (100%). The results so far obtained are discussed in relationships with the metabolism of IAA in plants.
