Abstract
1,2-dichloro-4-nitrobenzene (DcNB), a non-immunogenic chemical, when fed to guinea pigs 21 days before attempted contact sensitization to 2,4-dinitro-1-chlorobenzene (DNCB), induced tolerance with respect to contact sensitivity to DNCB. The tolerance was specific since DCNB induced no tolerance to citraconic anhydride under similar experimental conditions. Guinea pigs which were contact sensitive to DNCB did not cross-react to DCNB. The theoretical and potential practical implications of these findings are discussed.
