Abstract
The nitration of 2-hydroxypyridine-N-oxide, according to Lott and Shaw 3), has been repeated. The same nitration product as described by these authors was obtained; a new proof of its structure affirmed that the nitro group in this compound occupies the 5-position. Whereas thus in the nucleus the directive effect of the hydroxy group is not surpassed by that of the N-oxide group, the influence of the methoxy group appears to be smaller, for during the nitration of both 2- and 3-methoxy-pyridine-N-oxide the 4-nitro compounds are the sole reaction products isolated.
