Abstract
Abstract The infrared-induced isomerisation of 2-chloroethanol, 2-bromoethanol and 2-iodo-ethanol was studied in argon, nitrogen and methane matrices. Isomerisation was observed to occur only in argon matrices and was about three times slower for 2-bromoethanol than for 2-chloroethanol, whilst it was too slow to measure for 2-iodoethanol under the conditions used. The complex multiplet features observed in the CX stretching region have been interpreted in terms of isomerisation from the predominant Gg′ conformer to a mixture of Tt and Tg conformers in highly dilute matrices, while in concentrated matrices distinct bands due to multimers of the Tt or Tg conformer were identified.
