Abstract
A number of experimental studies have demonstrated that the use of indomethacin successfully inhibits the activity of prostaglandins. On the basis of these results, a trial of indomethacin administration was conducted among 50 women with clinical evidence of premature labor. The indomethacin had a marked effect on the uterine contractions, stopping them completely in 40 of the patients. The infant salvage rate was good: 38 mature infants, 12 immature. There were 4 neonatal deaths and 1 stillbirth.
