Abstract
Abstract Pepstatin, a carboxyl proteinase inhibitor isolated from the culture medium of a strain of Streptomyces, completely inhibits cathepsin D preparations from dystrophic chicken muscle and significantly inhibits the breakdown of muscle proteins in vitro in homogenates of dystrophic chicken muscle. Because of its low molecular weight and nontoxic nature, pepstatin would appear to offer some hope as a therapeutic agent for muscular dystrophy and other muscle wasting diseases.
