Abstract
Abstract Propylene sulphide is polymerized by zinc and cadmium thiolates, the latter being particularly active initiators. The polymerizations are non-terminating and there is a period of accelerating rate after which the rates are first order in monomer and initiator. The monomer is considered to be coordinated to the metal atom in the propagation reaction. Thiols are chain transfer agents and, dependent on the amount and functionality of the thiol, the molecular weight and branching in the polymer can be controlled.
