Abstract
Benzophenone (BP) forms a ground-state complex with 2,5-dimethyl-2,4-hexadiene (DMHD) and picosecond excitation of this complex gives rise to the appearance of a new absorption band (band C with λmax=565 nm). Irrespective of DMHD concentration, band C grows within the duration of the excitation light pulse and decreases following a single-exponential function with a lifetime of 10 ps. Hence, band C is assigned to the absorption of an excited singlet charge-transfer complex (1(BPδ−-DMHDδ+)*) or a singlet ion pair (1(BP−-DMHD+)), which decay process may be intracomplex back electron transfer (or charge recombination) yielding the ground-state BP-DMHD complex and/or free BP plus DMHD.
