Abstract
Abstract Sodium 5-(3-nitrophenylazo)salicylate reacts almost specifically with magnesium ions (at pH 10.5) to give a yellow coloured chelate. The solution has an absorbance maximum at 450 mμ. The sensitivity of the reaction is 0.01 μg of magnesium per cm 2 for log I 0 /I = 0.001. Optimum conditions for the reaction have been established. Development of the spectrophotometric method for the determination of magnesium included a study of the effect of pH, the ratio of reagent to magnesium, photometric stability of the complex, its conformity to Beer's law, and the rate of colour formation. The method has been applied successfully to the determination of magnesium in silica brick and silicon-aluminium alloy.
