Abstract
Abstract The pH and Hammett acidity dependences of the electronic absorption and fluorescence spectra of 5-hydroxyindole-2-carboxylic acid and its methyl ester have been studied. The results indicate that the prototropic species formed in the ground and excited singlet states are different, except for the trianion and the dication. The protonation and deprotonation constants have been evaluated and discussed.
