Abstract
The metastable transitions of the three‐carbon ions of propane, 2,2‐dideuteropropane, and 1,1,1,2,3,3,3‐heptadeuteropropane were investigated. Twenty‐one transitions involving loss of one or two H or D atoms were detected. A very strong isotope effect which effectively suppresses D elimination for ions in which H elimination is a possible competitive process was also established, confirming earlier results for the methane system. Only secondary propyl ions are formed via a metastable decay, and little or no hydrogen‐atom migration in the parent ion occurs prior to dissociation. In addition, elimination of the isotopic species in secondary reactions is far from statistical, suggesting that scrambling is also incomplete for these ions.
