Abstract
Introduction: (-)-Cubebin is a dibenzylbutyrolactolic lignan that is present in several plant families, such as Aristolochiaceae, Ruthaceae, Myristicaceae, and Piperaceae. In this work, its isolation was carried out from the seeds of Piper cubeba due to the great concentration of this metabolite in this specie. Objective: To isolate and to identify (-)-cubebin from P. cubeba seeds for further utilization in optimization studies for the obtaining of (-)-hinokinin through fungal biotransformation. Methodology: The extraction and isolation of (-)-cubebin was performed through maceration, followed by partition and finally using chromatographic techniques like vacuum liquid chromatography (VLC). Results: The fractions CB 6.7; CB 6.8; CB 6.9; CB 6.10 and CB 6.11. were obtained so far and were found to be the (-)-cubebin molecule after structural elucidation using H 1 and 13 C nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy techniques. Conclusion: The isolation process was considered satisfactory and the next step will be to submit the (-)-cubebin to a optimization study of the process of fungal biotransformation in order to obtain the (-)-hinokinin at maximum yields.
