Abstract
Abstract Infrared spectra have been obtained for 4-chloro-1 -butene and 4-bromo-1-butene in the vapor, liquid, and solid states. Two carbon-halogen stretch bands, assigned to two rotational isomers, were observed for each compound. In one rotamer, the halogen atom is approximately trans to the 2-carbon atom and, in the other, the halogen is approximately gauche to the 2-carbon. The gauche rotamer is the more stable form of both compounds in the vapor state. Vibrational assignments are proposed for the two compounds.
