Abstract
Combination of Carbonyl-Olefination and Directed Aldol Condensation Reaction of (formylmethyl)triphenylphosphonium chloride (7) with N,N-dimethyl-p-phenylenediamine, p-anisidine or cyclohexylamine in chloroform solution gives compounds 9a — 9c. In contrast, when compound 7 reacts with cyclohexylamine in absolute benzene or absolute DMSO, it yields acetylene, triphenylphosphine oxide, and cyclohexylamine hydrochloride. The phosphoranes 3a — 3c, synthesized from 9a — 9c with lithium diisopropylamide afford the Schiff bases 10a — 10c on treatment with benzaldehyde. On reaction with benzophenone, 3a and 3b yield the azomethines 12a and 12b. The Schiff base 13 is formed by reaction of 3a with fluorenone. — Although 9a gives the expected Schiff bases on reaction with aromatic aldehydes in the two-phase system dichloromethane/water using sodium hydroxide as deprotonation agent, the only ketone to give good yields is fluorenone. The pyrrole derivative 19 is produced by reaction of 9a with ω-chloroacetophenone.
