Abstract
Levamisole* i s the levoisomer of the synthetic drug tetramisole (phenylimidothiazole hydrochloride) first described by Thienpont et al. of Belgium in 1966.' It was developed initially as an antihelminthic agent and as such has been widely and safely used in Europe.'--3 Levamisole hydrochloride is a stable powder, highly soluble in aqueous solvents with a molecular weight of 240.75. Its chemical structure i s shown in Figure 1. In 1971, Renoux and Renouxl reported increased resistance to brucella infections in vaccinated mice given levamisole. Since that time there has been increasing interest in levamisole as a modulator of immunity.
