Abstract
Abstract After UV pulse excitation of 3,5-dinitroanisole a transient species is formed, which has been identified as an electronic triplet state. The lifetime varies over at least two orders of magnitude from a few nanoseconds to 1.4 μs as a function of H 2 O concentration in aqueous solvent mixtures. An explanation is offered in terms of a reduced mobility of the nitro group due to hydrogen bonded exciplexes and structural order in the liquid. A value of 7.6 kcal/mole has been determined for the energy of a hydrogen bond between 3,5-dinitroanisole and CH 3 OH and a value of 2.4 kcal/mole in the case of a hydrogen bond between alcohol molecules.
