Abstract
The self-induced exchange of tritium with dihalogenated aliphatic hydrocarbons, 1-chloro-3-iodopropane and 1-chloro-3-bromopropane, has been studied as a function of exposure time and tritium concentration. The iodine, bromine, chlorine, and hydrogen exchange rates were found to be a function of the bond dissociation energies involved. Since the weaker bonded atom is preferentially exchanged, this method can be used for the preparation of tritium-labeled compounds of highest specific activity.
