Abstract
A unique form of thrombosis results when sodium acetrizoate 70 % is administered i.v. This radiocontrast agent long ago was withdrawn from clinical investigational use as a cardiovascular visualization medium because cardiac arrhythmias and cerebrovascular accidents were encountered. Thrombosis results because acetrizoate extracts an endothelial component, a heat stable glycoprotein, which together with the radiocontrast agent produces an insoluble fibrillary fibrinogen derivative. These fibrils attach to endothelium and entrap erythrocytes in arterial, capillary and venous thrombi obstructing and embolizing in the microcirculation. Such thrombi form in our experimental preparation in the simultaneous absence of platelets and of all plasma coagulation factors except fibrinogen.
