Abstract
Abstract 1H,2H-Hexafluorocyclopentene is not polymerized by any of a range of active metathesis catalysts based on tungsten hexachloride. Partially fluorinaed bicyclo[2.2.1]hept-2-enes and bicyclo[2.2.1]hepta-2,5-dienes with fluorine substituents remote from the reacting double bond readily undergo ring opening polymerization under the influence of a catalyst system formed by reacting two moles of tetraphenyltin with tungsten hexachloride in toluene, other catalyst systems incorporating organoaluminium cocatalysts also cause polymerization but are less effective. The bicyclic dienes are the most reactive monomers examined, they readily copolymerize with cyclopentene and are also polymerized by tungsten hexachloride in the absence of activators or cocatalysts.
