Abstract
Abstract A convenient enzymic method for the large-scale preparation of nigerose (O-α- d -glucopyranosyl-(1 → 3)- d -glucose) and a series of nigeran oligosaccharides (alternating α-(1 → 3) and α-(1 → 4) linkages) is described. The oligosaccharides contain an even number of glucose units, differ in degree of polymerization by 2 units, and have α-(1 → 3) linkages at their reducing and nonreducings ends. By varying the conditions of the enzymic incubation (using DMSO), it is possible to influence the nature of the product distribution obtained so that either nigerose or the series of higher dextrins is the major product.
