Abstract
Use of gonadotropins for ovarian stimulation to achieve multiple follicular development in women with infertility undergoing ART is now standard practice. Manufacture of gonadotropins for routine clinical use initially involved urinary products. The first such product was menotropin, followed by urofollitropin and then highly purified urofollitropin. Reliance on urinary products posed many problems, including ready availability of raw material of consistent quality and the variability in biological effect from batch to batch.
