Abstract
Abstract Four homologs of the series tetradecyltrialkylammonium bromides (alkyl = methyl, ethyl, propyl, and butyl) were examined with the use of fluorescent probes (pyrene, dipyrenylpropane, 1,6-diphenyl-1,3,5-hexatriene). The surfactant aggreation number in micellar solutions decreases with increasing head group size with simultaneous increase in the microviscosity of the micelle interior, as sensed by diphenylhexatriene. The results are interpreted in terms of the steric hindrance at the micelle surface due to the large size of the head groups of the triethyl, tripropyl, and tributyl homologs.
