Abstract
Mirex (dodecachlorooactahydro-1,3,4-metheno-1H-cyclobutal [cd] pentalene) is an organochlorine insecticide used for control of the imported fire ant ( Solenopsis richteri Forel and Solenopsis invicta Buren) in large areas of the southern United States. This chemical has an affinity for lipids, and like certain chlorinated hydrocarbons, is stored and accumulated in the adipose portion of animal tissues. In addition to its use as a pesticide, Alley (1973) reported that it is used as a fire retardant in polymers.
