Abstract
Summary An age dependent study of RNA and protein syntheses was carried out in S. notophora using radioactive precursors. RNA synthesis in the ciliate steadily increased from G 1 phase and showed a peak at the end of S phase (8 h) while protein synthesis showed a peak at 6 h. 3 H-lysine incorporation was found to be more than leucine. The effect of metepa on the synthesis of RNA and proteins was also studied by treating ciliates in different phases of the cell cycle with different concentrations of metepa. Treatment reduced the synthesis of RNA and proteins in the G 1 , S and G 2 phases as compared to controls. But in general the S phase ciliates were the most susceptible and the G 2 phase were the least affected. Higher concentrations of metepa had an increased inhibitory affect on RNA and protein synthesis. However, the treated ciliates showed increase in synthesis of RNA and proteins when allowed to recover.
