Abstract
Abstract The herbicide 3-amino-1,2,4-triazole (amitrole) is shown to inhibit imidazoleglycerol phosphate dehydratase, an enzyme of histidine biosynthesis, in Salmonella typhimurium . Amitrole also appears to inhibit purine synthesis. Inhibition of the bacteria by amitrole is potentiated by triazolealanine, a histidine analogue, that prevents derepression of the histidine biosynthetic enzymes. The mode of action of the herbicide is discussed in view of these findings.
