Abstract
Abstract Typical methylating agents are low level mutagens for TMV and TMV-RNA. Diethyl sulfate is not mutagenic, but ethyl alkylsulfonates resemble methylating agents in their mutagenicity. The very high mutagenicity of N -methyl- N -nitroso- N ′-nitroguanidine (“nitrosoguanidine”) when acting on TMV, as contrasted to TMV-RNA, has been observed at both pH 4 and 5.5. N -Isobutyl- N -nitroso- N′ -nitroguanidine also is more mutagenic for the virus than for the RNA, but this is not the case for N -amyl- N -nitroso- N′ -nitroguanidine. Methyl nitrosourethane behaves like typical methylating agents both chemically and biologically.
