Abstract
N-(1-Naphthyl)ethylenediamine dihydrochloride dissolved in sulfuric acid-methanol is used as a reagent for determination of sugars on thin-layer plates. The quantification process involves a linear expansion giving a straight calibration line, the equation of which is (peak areas)x = p (amount); the parameters (x) and (p) are correlated to the number of hydroxyl groups of the molecules. The accuracy ranges from 6 to 0.25%, respectively, in the range 0.06 to 80 nmol of spotted quantities.
