Abstract
Abstract The Universities Space Research Association (USRA), sponsored by the NASA Office of Space Science and Applications, conducted a Telescience Testbed Pilot Program (TTPP). Fifteen universities, under subcontract to USRA, conducted various scientific experiments using advanced computer and communications technologies. The goals of this pilot program were to develop technical and programmatic recommendations for the use of rapid-prototyping testbeds as a means for addressing critical issues in the design of the information system of the Space Station Freedom era. In this paper, we discuss the results from the TTPP. These results include lessons learned about the technical requirements in four scientific areas (Earth Systems Sciences, Life Sciences, Microgravity Sciences, and Astronomy and Astrophysics) as well as general technical and programmatic lessons concerning the information system of the future. The TTPP proved the effectiveness of having users, developers, and technologists join together in the investigation of critical information system issues.
