Abstract
Pure acetone-d6 has been prepared by reaction of heavy water with propyne-d4 in the liquid phase and a mercury catalyst. Propyne-d4 was obtained by hydrolysis of magnesium carbide Mg2C3 with heavy water. A practical procedure for 20 g amounts of acetone-d6 is given in detail. Its over-all consumption of heavy water exceeds the theoretical amount by only 5–10%.
