Abstract
The acute lung injury resulting from subcutaneous injection of N-nitroso-N-methylurethane (NNMU) exhibits pathological characteristics of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) such as severe impairment of gas exchange, pulmonary edema, neutrophilic influx into the alveolar space, alterations in surfactant composition, and surfactant dysfunction. This chapter summarizes the published data concerning the use of the NNMU animal model in the investigation of ARDS.
