Abstract
The novel formation of salicylaldehyde azine and related azines from the corresponding methylhydrazone substrate induced by tin(IV) chloride is described. The reaction causes a rupture in the N-N bond of the methylhydrazone resulting in the loss of the methylamino moiety. Subsequent combination of two of the salicylidenimine or related salicylidenimine fragments results in the formation of the symmetrical azine. The structure of 3-methoxysalicylaldehyde azine has been determined by X-ray crystalbgraphic analysis.
