Abstract
Acid potassium soaps (KHA2, in which A stands for carboxylate) of myristic acid, palmitic acid, and stearic acid were studied with a Fourier-transform infrared spectrometer. The infrared spectra of the acid soaps showed only one carboxylate mode in the range 1800-1500cm-1. It is suggested that a new type of H-bonding, in which the proton is shared by two carboxylate groups, exists in the acid soaps. In this work, it was also observed that these acid soaps underwent structural transitions with increasing pressure. The spectral results are analysed and discussed.
