Abstract
A novel reaction of cyanide with 2,2-dihydroxy-1,3-indanedione resulting in the purple or blue colored salts of 2-cyano-1,2,3-trihydroxy-2H indene is investigated. Hydrindantin proved to be an intermediary of this reaction. The reaction is already used for analytical purposes and its specificity and fundamental significance for cyanide assay in the environment and in the body fluids are discussed herein. Ruhemann's sequence of the reactions of cyanide with ninhydrin is reconsidered and a convincing mechanism of reaction is proposed. Also, some other new compounds in the reaction of cyanide with ninhydrin, such as acetic acid 2-cyano-2,3-dihydroxy-2H-inden-1-yl ester and 2-(2-cyano-2-hydroxy-acetyl)-benzoic acid have been isolated and characterized. In addition, the influence of oxidizers and copper, silver and mercury ions has been investigated.
