Abstract
Octadecylamine is effective as an internal sizing agent when used alone, or without alum as a mordant. With unbleached kraft pulp, 0.25% octadecylamine (on dry pulp) was enough to induce sizing. Bleached kraft pulp required 0.5% octadecylamine. The sizing efficiency depended on the temperature, the presence of metallic ions, and the storage time of the stock. The optimum pH range was 7-10. Paper strength decreased with the use of octadecylamine. However, cationic starch can be added to overcome the strength loss. Application : octadecylamine is a new internal sizing agent that may offer superior sizing performance in some specialized applications.
