Abstract
The purpose of this study was to demonstrate the use of ozone therapy as a method for sanitizing and improving tissues during endodontic treatment. Methods: The methodology adopted was the bibliographic research of scientific articles from 2000 to 2019, delving into the subject of the use of ozone in dental treatment. Bibliographic Review: The use of irrigating compounds for root canal treatment has important substances to combat microorganisms, prioritizing the sanitization of the environment that will be treated, seeking to minimize the significant effects of damage to the dental pulp, which is why pain occurs due to the established inflammation that, if not treated in time, can cause systemic complications to the patient. For this reason, the present study recovers the study of ozone therapy that was interrupted for a few decades due to the lack of material that could resist high ozone oxidation. The addition of other supporting substances to ozone treatment should be applied by a professional who knows the limitations of applicability in deep caries, and treatments of this type are indicated only in superficial caries, or combined with irrigating substances that help in sanitization, especially during root canal treatment. Some studies using ionized water or ozone gas have not been successful due to technical limitations that harmed the analysis of the results. Conclusion: It is concluded that ozone therapy, in the protocols presented, in most studies had succesful effects in reducing the presence of microorganisms. Ozone efficiency in the control of microorganisms is verified, making it able to be used in the dental treatment of root canals.
