Abstract
N 1 -Methyl-4-pyridone-3-carboxamide, a major metabolite of nicotinic acid and nicotinamide, has been found to be synthesized from N 1 -methylnicotinamide, the biosynthesis being catalyzed by a soluble enzyme system present in liver. In the presence of potassium ferricyanide, the oxidation of N 1 -methylnicotinamide occurred in the absence of molecular oxygen, indicating that the oxygen introduced into the 4-position of the substrate is derived from H 2 O and not from O 2 .
