Abstract
The use of enzymatic methods for peptide synthesis is an expanding research field and these methods now constitute an important complement to the methods using chemical reagents.' In this study, a-chymotrypsin was evaluated as a catalyst in reaction systems containing organic solvents and minor amounts of water. The enzyme was immobilized by drying onto celite and these preparations were used to catalyze reactions between Z-Phe-OMe and different amino acid amides (FIGURE l).24 The reactions were carried out under a variety of conditions to investigate the influence of the solvent, the water content, etc., on the yield and reaction rate.
