Abstract
PERPHENAZINE B.P. (Fentazin, Allen and Hanbury) was introduced several years ago into clinical practice and its value in psychiatry, anaesthesia and general medicine is well established. It is a piperazine phenothiazine derivative several times more potent, weight for weight, than earlier phenothiazines such as chlorpromazine and is especially useful in treating anxiety, tension, and psychomotor excitement. It is also a potent antiemetic which property is mainly responsible for its widespread use in otolaryngology to relieve post-anaesthetic vomiting and post-operative labyrinthine reactions. It is usually administered as a 5 mg. intramuscular injection as necessary, the daily total dose not exceeding 30 mg. for in-patients. Oral and intravenous preparations are available. In psychiatric practice prolonged therapy is used. This present paper is concerned with the unusual presentation of one of the side-effects of the drug which might well be known to otolaryngologists.
