Abstract
Among the various acetylcholinesterase inhibitors that have been investigated for potential use in the symptomatic treatment of Alzheimer's disease, the aminoacridines have been used most extensively in the clinical setting. Although these agents have not been as effective in Alzheimer's disease as expected from initial findings on tacrine, subsequent studies of tacrine and velnacrine indicate that the two agents are associated with modest improvement of cognitive function and functional activities in a subset of patients while having a roughly predictable safety profile. At this stage in the development of drugs for Alzheimer's disease, these agents may play an important although limited role
