Abstract
Abstract This paper describes experimental results for the mediated electrooxidation of 4-nitrotoluene into 4-nitrobenzoic acid. The organic substrate is chemically oxidated by hexavalent chromium in a sulphuric medium (6 M) at 80°C; the presence of a phase transfer agent (tetrabutylammonium hydrogenosulphate, TBA) greatly accelerates the reaction. Used solutions of chromium were regnerated at a lead oxide anode with a Faradaic yield close to 67%. No drastic influence of the remaining TBA in the aqueous phase was observed.
