Abstract
The photolysis of 0.25 M aqueous 2,2-dichloropropionic acid was investigated using 253.7 nm light. Carbon dioxide, chloride ion, pyruvic acid, acetaldehyde, and 1,1-dichloroethane were identified as degradation products. A water-insoluble polymeric product was also observed and partially characterized. Quantum yields of the photolysis products were determined for agitated samples flushed with either air or nitrogen and nonagitated samples sealed in the presence of air. The percent yield for 2,2-dichloropropionic acid (unreacted) and most of the photolytic products was estimated as a function of irradiation time. A comparison of the 2,2-dichloropropionic acid quantum yields under nonoxygenated conditions was made with data previously reported for dichloroacetic acid, and the results indicate that dichloropropionic acid is more easily photodegraded. Therefore, the additional methyl group in the next higher homolog does appear to affect the photochemistry of the 2,2-dichlorinated acids.
