Abstract
Bis(dithiobenzil)nickel, although photoinert in nonhalogenated solvents as well as in chloroform under 313 nm irradiation, reacts in CHCl3 under 254 nm irradiation to yield 2,3,5,6-tetraphenyl-1,4-dithiin and a water-soluble nickel(II) species. The reaction is driven through absorption of light by both the solvent and the metal complex.
