Abstract
Modern physico-biochemistry has contributed significantly to steroid research, yielding important medical applications, including prognosis of prostate and breast cancer and their treatment. In this special issue scientists engaged in this domain applied or discussed rapid kinetics, enzymology, binding studies including protein–protein interactions and inhibitor design for steroid-converting enzymes and sex-hormone receptors. Endocrinological and intracrinological experimental systems are also explored. Moreover, the study of enzyme mechanism in living cells is attempted and the effect of substrate inhibition is clearly demonstrated in the cellular environment. The structural biology of steroid-converting enzymes is reviewed and their important characteristic alternative binding modes are analysed with respect to their functions.
