Abstract
In studies on the mechanism of dormancy of catchweed seeds, a growth inhibitor isolated from the dormant seeds has been identified as asperuloside (Asp), one of the iridoidglucosides. In a previous paper, it was indicated that the substance has not only an inhibitory effect on the germination of the seeds themselves, but also an allelopathic effect since it is released from the seeds and inhibits the growth of other plants. A few Asprelated compounds were also detected on TLC of the water soluble fraction of the seeds9). In the present paper, the chemical structures of Asp-related compounds isolated from the dormant seeds of catchweed were determined and their growth inhibitory effect on several plants was tested.
