Abstract
Ethotoin was introduced as an anti-epileptic drug more than 20 years ago. Controlled studies of the therapeutic effect of this hydantoin derivative have never been carried out. Pilot studies gave the impression of an anti-epileptic effect somewhat less than that of phenytoin (DPH) (Livingston, 1956). However, the well known and sometimes troublesome side-effects of DPH, gingival hyperplasia and hypertrichosis, are not seen with ethotoin. Therefore, ethotoin may be used to replace DPH in cases of not too severe epilepsy if gingival hyperplasia or hypertrichosis have developed.
