Abstract
Summary The polarographic behaviour of diphenyl disulphide has been studied in DMF and DMSO and compared with mercury(II) thiophenolate and sodium thiophenolate. Diphenyl disulphide is reduced according to a two electron mechanism to thiophenolate in one step, and a mercury-assisted mechanism can neither be ascertained nor be disproved. Controlled-potential coulometry and analysis of the polarographic waves indicate that sodium thiophenolate and mercury(II) thiophenolate constitute an approximately reversible redox system showing two polarographic steps with a trithiophenolatemercurate(II) ion intermediately formed in the first step.
