Abstract
4-(3-Chloropropyl)styrene, a new functionalized styrene, has been synthesized in three steps from 3-chloropropylbenzene or in two steps from 4-chlorostyrene, and the polymerization has been carried out in bulk, with azobisisobutyronitrile as an initiator. The polymer has been characterized by its molecular weights, glass transition temperature, and NMR spectra. Thermal degradation has also been studied and volatile fractions characterized by GC-MS. A mechanism of depolymerization, very similar to those of various polystyrenes, can be proposed.
